Two of my favourite things (aside from my family, and chocolate) are sleeping and helping people get back to sleep! What I enjoy about being a sleep specialist is supporting exhausted families as they take the journey to healthy sleep habits. If you are tired, confused, and frustrated by all of your efforts to get some Zzzz’s I can help. I was once in your shoes, I now know the importance of teaching our children how to sleep; it’s made me a better parent, partner and human being in general! Sleep is my thing; so let me share my passion with you!
Before I had kids I was the perfect parent- I knew what to do based on what I had read, I knew it was going to be hard but I could handle it! Then I had a baby and spent the first 5 months loving her and holding her and doing everything in my power to care for my precious little baby…and then my husband broke his leg really badly and I found myself taking care of two babies (one just a little larger than the other). This is when I realized how much getting up multiple times in the night to “feed” her until she slept was really taking a toll on my own well being.
She had slept well when she was a newborn but as she became more independent her sleep became increasingly interrupted and none of my old tricks (bouncing on a workout ball, holding a soother in her mouth while we ran a hairdryer for white noise) seemed to work anymore, they actually seemed to be making her more upset! I was exhausted, confused and desperate. This amazing time in my life was over-shadowed by this beautiful baby that would not sleep unless I was there to assist her. What I learned was that I was actually the problem, I had prevented my daughter from learning how to sleep on her own and made it so that she relied on me to fall asleep.
As it turns out my child is an expert sleeper- she went from waking multiple times a night to sleeping through the night within a few days with only a few minor regressions. I now realize that she had wanted to sleep this whole time but I had been holding her back, she needed to learn it for herself. It’s like teaching a child how to swim- you can sign them up for lessons, buy them a new swimsuit and take them to the pool, but at the end of the day they have to learn the skill themselves. Not unlike swimming, sleeping is a skill we must learn. I hadn’t been giving her the proper tools she needed to succeed…and once I did she was beyond ready!
Hi! I’m Brooke, owner of Bedtime Beginnings. I’m passionate about supporting families and wee ones get the rest their bodies need, and it’s my commitment to help people find the personalized solutions needed to get a good night’s sleep. Like so many others, I went through the exhausting experience of trying to get my child to sleep; as if this wasn’t bad enough, I was tending to my other small child, all while my husband was incapacitated with a broken leg! He still won’t say whether or not that was on purpose.
Finding the solution to my daughter’s sleep problem was such a relieving experience, and being fortunate enough to help others can be so rewarding. I love hearing that relief in their voices when we’ve found the perfect solution.
Some fun facts about me:
• Rescuing people is kinda my thing. As a teenager, I was a lifeguard and swim instructor, and am still certified in CPR!
• I spent a full year of my teenaged life in Brazil via the Rotary Exchange! I used to be fluent in Portuguese, too, though Já não tenho muita prática (I don’t get a lot of practice anymore!).
The day to day chaos of parenting is much easier to manage when the whole family is getting the sleep they need.
If you are struggling with getting your little one to sleep and can only vaguely remember what a full night’s sleep feels like, I encourage you to contact me so I can get you and your family sleeping through the night again.
If you are overwhelmed by the hundreds of books and blogs about sleep then let me help. I have read the books, taken a comprehensive training program and continue to expand my education so that I can help as many people as possible get back to sleep. It is one of my favourite things, after all!
